Board Game Recommendations

Here are my board game recommendations:

Here are some of the curated information I found online so far this past week for you guys to peruse.

  • I found a game on Table Top Gaming you should definitely check out. The item is called Superverse. In it, the multiverse is collapsing and it is up to you to save it by creating a superhero. The catch is there are over a thousand combinations to do so! Each hero from each universe with their own backstory, sidekick, power, etc. is at your fingertips. Check it out because I will!
  • This item won’t be out just yet because it is on Kickstarter. It is an expansion of the Munchkin Steampunk card game called Munchkin Steampunk: Girl Genius. It is an expansion of the original game and unique by most standards. This expansion is actually based on a webcomic called Girl Genius. There is a main protagonist by the name of Agatha Heterodyne who go on adventures with her friends against her foes. It adds to the game by adding a “spark” or ability to increase your items combat skill points. It looks really awesome so click on the link above and tell me your thoughts.
  • There is a gaming convention for all you southern wisconsities, but it has the worst name I have ever heard of for it. Gamehole Con (Really? Nothing better came to mind!) is being held now in Madison, WI. Change your plans and head on out there for all your gaming needs and play!
  •  I found a website that allows people to play board games online while you work online. It is called Your turn My turn and it has the mixture of classic games like chess and backgammon along with new ones like carcassonne. You log in and pick a game and wait or join someone already waiting. Sounds like fun while you are shopping or working online.
  • The third edition of Arkham Horror is out for all you A.H. hardcore fans out there. In this edition, instead of a board or video game style, you get tiles to link to create a more dynamic adventure to pursue. Check out the video review of the game and let me know what you think because I have the first and second edition and want to know if the third is worth it.

  • This article from Gameosity has me very excited. In short, it is an abstract game system collection with the ancient world multi game system by Playford. In it, you can play different games from ancient civilizations and use the pieces from the system to experiment in making your own game. That would be so cool! Please check it out because I am definitely adding it to my wish list.
  • There are plenty of podcasts out there for people to listen to for every possible topic out there including games. My favorite podcasts I listen to are The Adventure Zone by the McElroy brothers and their father and Critical Roll hosted by experienced voice actors. Each one plays out a D&D campaign in their own fashion resulting in hilarious results. Check them out and me know what you all think.
  • Here is something for you guys into the surreal: A high school decided to do their prom baseing the theme on the board game, Monopoly. I wonder how many people showed up as the thimble? Check it out here and share your thoughts down below.
  • Not many board games get made into movies. There is Clue, a favorite cult classic of mine, the Dungeon and Dragons versions available, and the recent Warhammer (I think) that came out a couple of years ago. Now, Variety is reporting that DreamWorks will be developing an animated movie based on the game Mice and Mystic. Check out the report and let me know if this is a good or bad idea.
  • Forgive me for this article being a little old, but it is important to share. Board games have been given a bad rap in a lot of circles because of how it is perceived to being “childish” and boring. However, I  found this article promoting board game play on the Speech & Hearing Associates website and had to share it with you all. It goes over how certain board games trains and improves a person’s mental skills. Please share this with your friends and, perhaps, your own stories about what games are good at training your cognitive abilities.

Important links to look at.

This link asks the question, “What games are fun to play, even when you lose?” To me, I have to say Castle of Mad King Ludwig is the best game to play for fun while losing. The game is about a king who contracts the players to build a castle for him. In playing the game, I had 5 hallways that led to nowhere, the entrance to the castle being the bathroom, and the dungeon next to the bedroom. It is a fun game to play even while banging your head against the table because someone else got the gameroom while you are forced to get your 5th hallway.

If you are fan of Fluxx, the card game, then you are in luck! If not, you should be! Fluxx is a card game of ever changing rules depending on you and your friend’s play. You start of with three cards and two rules: Draw and play one card. After that, it is up to you and the players with you to see who actually wins. The players set the goal or goals as you change the rules to your advantage or disadvantage to the other players. Different versions of Fluxx involves zombies, Marvel characters, pirates, and even the Wizard of Oz. Now, you can play Fluxx with a fairy tale theme. Enjoy

I love hearing about new board games. Jess’s reviews are in and they look interesting. Lock-up looks interesting, but I never got a chance to play Roll Player so I can’t say too much on whether it is an improvement over the original. Let me know what you guys think of this game. Set A Watch sounds like Castle Panic, but with a twist. Your location you are defending changes each round versus a stationary one. If it is similar to Castle Panic, then it is worth a look at. The Artemis Project looks exciting! It is a combination between Transforming Mars and Settlers of Catan. I am really looking forward to playing this game when I can get the chance. The Stygian Society game might not be a big hit in my mind. If you like a lot of luck in your board games, then this might thrill you, but I like a balance of both strategy and luck for my playing pleasure. I will wait and hear from other people before investing in this game. The game I am looking forward the most is Bee Lives: We Will Only Know Summer. It is a  game that incorporates building tiles, strategizing and using resources toward a goal, and competitive play through raids and attacks. A real nice combination of game play for sure.

This game looks like fun. I think Quinn does a great job in reviewing and explaining how to play the game. Check the video out and give me your opinion about the game and the presentation. Did Quinn do an excellent job explaining the rules? Did he go too fast or was it to complicated?

5. http://www.mechanics-and-meeples.com/2018/09/24/a-model-for-decision-making-in-games-part-one-action-selection/

This is a discussion post on decision making in game play. Usually, I don’t get too deep in thought on how to play a game, but I am interested on how people choose to play different types of games. How does one choose a method? Is there a strategy to game play that reduces the lucky or unlucky roll of the dice? I recommend reading this if you ever wanted to know how to change up your strategy in playing your favorite game.
